The Columbia University Association of Black Journalists is proud to welcome Michael Feeney to the Columbia Journalism School in the Stabile Student Center on Monday, Nov. 8, at 12 p.m.
At 27 years old, one could say Michael Feeney is already an accomplished journalist. This past July, the New York Daily News reporter accepted the Emerging Journalist of the Year award at the National Association of Black Journalists‘ annual convention.
The Delaware State University alum set out on his career path as editor of his alma mater’s The Hornet Newspaper. After his 2005 graduation, Feeney landed an internship with the Associated Press office in Baltimore, Md. He then went on to become a full-time AP writer at the organization’s Detroit, Mich. office the following year, in 2006. He spent nearly a year at AP before returning to his native New Jersey to write for The Record. During his three-year tenure there, he covered several New Jersey counties and police precincts, and his multimedia work was also featured on the paper’s online version at NorthJersey.com.
Then, in 2009, Feeney was offered a spot as a staff writer for the New York Daily News. His Daily News work has spanned everything from NYC crimes to celebrity hookups.
Feeney attended the Knight Multimedia Journalism workshop at the University of California, Berkeley in 2007. He also runs his own pop culture blog, mfeenz.com. Feeney credits the help of NABJ with much of the success in his career and the valuable mentors and friendships he has gained over the years.
Now Feeney is focused on becoming an all-around reporter who can effectively report across every platform, and do so well. Being a reporter for a New York newspaper is great, but Feeney isn’t resting on his laurels.
He’s set his sights on possibly writing a few books, doing some work in TV, and becoming a media executive at some point.
“It’s important that we have diversity in the higher ranks of our news organizations, and I think that is what is sorely missing today,” he said. “I hope to change that.”
